Grant has enjoyed canoeing over the last three decades. While at unversity, he began taking group trips from Toronto to Algonquian Park and has continues to visit the Park. For quick recreation he canoes the lakes in Gatineau Park. While living in Inuvik, in the Northwest Territories, Grant first canoed on the Mackenzie River (the Decho) to the main channel and later traced the river's route from Fort Simpson to Willow Lake River. He has also canoed the Liard River from Fort Nelson to Fort Simpson and has visited Nahanni Park and canoed on the Nahanni River. Recently, he has canoed on the Ottawa River visiting one of the earliest Northwest Trading Company sites near Quyon, Quebec.
